If you are an acne sufferer you have no doubt heard about the problems that can result from scarring.  Acne causes blemishes that when left untreated can turn into pitted or raised scars on the face.  Most people are well aware of this fact, and this has created a large market for products claiming to help reduce or eliminate scarring.  While there are many products that can assist you in treating your acne, the most important aspect of scar treatment is scar prevention.
For anyone serious about scar prevention you need to start by preventing yourself from picking your skin.  Picking at the skin is the number 1 reason why people start to develop scars in place of their blemishes.  Picking at the blemishes interrupts the body’s natural healing process.  In addition picking at your face can cause scabs which can later turn into scars.  In addition every time you touch your face you are introducing new bacteria to your skin.  This can cause a host of issues including new blemishes altogether.
If you have stopped picking at your blemishes you are truly half way to preventing scars on your face.  The other half of the equation will have to do with traditional treatments to cure acne.  These usually involve a doctor prescribed drying agent for the face.  Since most blemishes are caused by an overproduction of oil on the face, drying agents work at the root of the problem.  The most common types of drying agents prescribed are benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.  Usually a medication will contain a combination of one of these agents and an antibiotic.  Some of the better medication contain both of these together is special formulations.  Basically the only way to find out which combination of drying agents work the best is to test different ones out on your skin.  There is so much variability in terms of natural oil production, and response to medication, that there is really no way to predict how you will react.
Our best advice would be to start with one of the more mild acne creams.  Usually the label will indicate whether the cream in question is on the more mild or harsh side.  Remember less drying affect is usually better then more.  IF the skin becomes too dried out, this can cause irritation in itself.  Also do not worry about whether or not you are using a brand name or a generic.  Similar to many other types of medication, you should be able to see the type and amounts of active ingredients being used in the medication.
If you are beyond acne treatment and are already seeking scar treatment there will be a limited selection of over the counter products you can use to reduce the appearance andeffects of scars.  Basically you can try to reduce the inflammation around scars, or you can try to remove some of the scar tissue.  In order to remove the scar tissue you have to get some type of abrasion pads or chemical peel.  A chemical peel can be something as simple as an exfoliating mask.  On the stronger end of the spectrum there are masks that can work to chemically burn off some of the acne.   Regardless of the condition you are looking to treat there are reviews of all the best products at treatacneathome.com
